A guide to Ocean City events- October 17 and 18

Playland Castaway Cove

For the first time in what feels like a very long time, there are events happening in Ocean City over the weekend. The events – like Playland’s Castaway Cove amusement park staying open an extra weekend – extend the fun season. At the beach, an extension of summer fun is always a good thing. This year, it’s fantastic.

Here are three events happening this weekend.

Playland and Wonderland open one more weekend

Usually the second weekend in October is the last big hurrah for some seasonal businesses in OC. Tables sales are over; It’s closing weekend for some restaurants and it’s the last weekend for rides.

This year has been anything but typical, and it continues… this month, the fun is extending another week. Playland Castaway Cove is staying open until the weekend of October 17 and 18. Because of rainy weather this past weekend, their wristband event has been rescheduled for next weekend.

The “wristband special” will be held from 2-7pm on both days. Participants can get five hours of rides for $20 per person.

Gillian’s Wonderland Pier plans to stay opens weekends until the end of the year, weather permitting. This weekend, they will be open Saturday and Sunday from 12-5pm for indoor rides, the Giant Wheel and the Wacky Worm. Wristbands cost $15 per person.

“The Gruffalo” meet and greet

Are you looking to go on a pretty fall walk, complete with some crunchy leaves? The Ocean City Free Public Library has an event for you.

They will be hosting a StoryWalk® to read “The Gruffalo” by Julia Donaldson at Lake Memorial Park, 407 Wesley Avenue in Ocean City. The event will be held from October 9 to November 30.

Participants are asked to wear a mask and practice social distancing guidelines.

Families will be able to scan QR codes on posters placed throughout the park to register and participate in a scavenger hunt.

There will be a special meet and greet at Lake Memorial Park on October 17 from 10am to 1pm.

The Lighthouse Challenge

The Lighthouse Challenge will also be taking place this weekend. The idea behind this annual challenge is to tour all of the New Jersey lighthouses in one weekend. This year is a little different. There’s two events happening- The Challenge, taking place on the weekend of October 17 and 18, and a new, virtual challenge, taking place all month.

The Challenge this year is smaller due to some lighthouses and life saving stations being closed because of COVID-19. Luckily, the U.S. Life Saving Station 30, located in Ocean City, is part of the challenge.
