Ocean City offers limited indoor fitness

One night, you have a dream.

You’re at your favorite fitness studio. You get to go in and take a class, seeing all of your favorite familiar faces. When you wake up, you realize it was just a dream. Indoor fitness isn’t currently available in Ocean City until September 1, when it will be limited to 25 percent capacity.

But what if you want to do indoor fitness before then? Well, you have some options.

The Aquatic and Fitness Center, 1735 Simpson Avenue, has reopened their indoor pool for current members.

“Right now; it’s by reservation. Since we’re a six lane pool, we have two swimmers per lane. We are providing some rec time, so then it’s four laps, then it’s eight swimmers for laps, eight for rec.,” said Lisa Rumer, supervisor at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.

The City of Ocean City recently announced that the Aquatic and Fitness Center would be reopening on September 1 at 25 percent capacity. Patrons will be able to reserve 45 minute time slots to use the equipment. There will be a deep cleaning done halfway through the day. Occupancy will be limited to 20 people.

If you’re looking for indoor yoga, you have an option.

Luna Soul and Bowls, 108 Route 50, Units 2 & 3, Ocean View, is offering one on one classes in addition to their virtual offerings.

If you’re looking for group classes on the island, there’s two to choose from.

Diamond Barre Fitness, 750 Asbury Avenue, is able to open for small indoor classes.

“We were approved to open for indoor classes. We are doing small group classes with a max of eight people and one on one private sessions in studio or on location (we have some clients that prefer us to come to their home,” said Holly Wentz, owner.

Golden Buddha Yoga, 841 Central Avenue, is also opened for limited classes.

If you’re looking for something for kids, RA Development Academy is offering small clinics and one on one training. Jill Adamson, co-owner, explained that changes had to happen because of COVID.

“We’ve had to reinvent what our business is. We had masks made for our business. We do temperature checks. We maintain social distance,” said Jill.

They offer conditioning and training for all sports.

“We’re going to be offering small clinics, and one on one. We’ve had a tremendous response,” said Jill.

RA Development Academy will be hosting a socially distant basketball free throw contest on Sunday, September 6 from 4-6 p.m. for children between third and eighth grade. This event, held at Trinity Church in Marmora, will be benefiting local charities and non-profits.

“For a normal business like myself to open, I have to pay utilities and air conditioning,” he said.

He’s understandably frustrated and knows that physical fitness leads to a stronger immune system.

He knows of some gyms in the South Jersey area who have permanently closed.

“Everyone’s got to do what they have to do. [It’s been] 140 days that we’ve been closed. There’s no help,” said Chris.
