Local Expert: Savoring Summer, Planning for the Life Beyond Work

The Dog Days of Summer and the Retirement You’ve Been Working Toward

Most people know the phrase “the dog days of summer,” but few know where it came from. Traditionally, it refers to when the constellation Sirius (the dog star) is visible in the sky, but it’s also the hottest days of the year, from early July through mid-August, a season associated with slowing down and making the most of summer before it’s over. If you’ve spent time in Ocean City during August, you know exactly what that feels like.

The pace changes. Families linger over breakfast before heading to the beach. Evening walks on the Boardwalk replace packed itineraries. Sunsets become an event instead of an afterthought. Knowing summer won’t last forever, we try to make each day a little more meaningful.

Ironically, many of us spend decades doing just the opposite. We race from one deadline to the next, balancing careers, raising families, paying bills, and saving for “someday.” We often imagine retirement as simply the day we stop working. But after helping hundreds of families prepare for retirement, we’ve learned that retirement isn’t defined by the day you leave your job. It’s defined by what comes next. The happiest retirees aren’t necessarily the ones with the largest portfolios. They’re the ones who have a plan for the life they want to live.

At Reich Asset Management, we call that the Enjoyable Retirement SolutionTM. We spend time understanding what clients want retirement to look like and not just the financial picture. Do they picture mornings on the golf course? More time with grandchildren? Volunteering in the community? Traveling? Working in some capacity? Every retirement looks different. Once these goals are clear, we build the financial strategy designed to support them.

Just as August reminds us to slow down and savor the best parts of summer, retirement offers the opportunity to enjoy the years you’ve spent working toward. But those moments rarely happen by accident. They are the result of thoughtful preparation, intentional decisions, and a plan built around your priorities, not someone else’s.

As another Ocean City summer winds down, it’s worth asking yourself a simple question: If retirement began tomorrow, would you know exactly how you’d spend your days? The ultimate goal of retirement planning isn’t simply accumulating enough money to stop working. It’s creating the freedom and confidence to enjoy the life you’ve worked so hard to build.
