Winter Hygge Guide: Simple Ways to Get Cozy at the Jersey Shore
November hits, and suddenly it feels like it’s pitch black by 2pm. The wind has major opinions, the temps dip, and holiday commercials are already yelling at you to do more, buy more, and bake better cookies, Martha.
Let’s not.
Instead, let’s talk about hygge (pronounced hue-guh). It’s a Danish word with no perfect English translation, but the idea is beautifully simple: slowing down, stepping away from the rush, and enjoying time with the people you love—or enjoying your own company. It’s not about fancy candles or perfect Instagram aesthetics. It’s about staying present and savoring the little things. And considering Denmark consistently ranks among the world’s happiest countries, it might be worth borrowing a few of their ideas for our little beach town.
Here are some ways to bring hygge into your Ocean City home this season:
Turn Down the Lights
Skip the harsh overhead lighting. Think soft twinkle lights on the porch or a single warm lamp for dinner. For extra coziness, grab a few candles from your last Downtown stroll.

The Mug Life
Pick a daily “cozy mug” and make it a ritual—morning coffee, afternoon tea, or a calming nighttime blend. Slow sipping required. Shop our list of hygge essentials below.
Claim a Cozy Corner
Choose a spot in your home and unapologetically make it your comfort zone. Think: your kindergarten reading nook but with adult upgrades. A fluffy blanket (or two), a great read, and a strict no-phone policy. No doomscrolling allowed. This is your official “do nothing” nook.
Invite People In (The Ones That Make Your Heart Happy)
Hygge isn’t about hosting a Pinterest-perfect party. It’s about comfort. Try pajama game night with friends, a spontaneous cookie bake with the kids, or wine on the deck with warm blankets.
Get Soft
Fuzzy socks. UGG slip-ons. Oversized hoodies. Sweatpants. Blanket forts in the living room. Wrap yourself like a burrito and embrace it.
Do Less, Enjoy More
Say “no” more often. Seriously. Say no to chaos. Say yes to your favorite movie, your slow morning before work, your not-so-fancy dinner. Rest does not need to be earned. – Lauren Deckard
BONUS READ – A (Cozy) Little History of Hygge
Hygge may be trending here in the U.S., but the concept has deep roots in Denmark. The word dates back to the early 1800s and is thought to come from an Old Norse term meaning “to comfort” or “to console.” Long before it showed up on mood boards, hygge was simply a way of life for Danes who endured long, dark Scandinavian winters.
With limited daylight and months of cold weather, people created indoor rituals that fostered warmth, connection, and well-being. Instead of resisting winter, they embraced it, gathering with friends, lighting candles, sharing meals, and slowing down their daily pace. Over time, these behaviors became cultural and a major reason Denmark consistently ranks as one of the world’s happiest countries.
