US Life Saving Station 30

US Life Saving Station 30
US Life Saving Station 30 is featured in the Welcome to Ocean City Guidebook 2020

STANDING at the corner of 4th and Atlantic is US Life Saving Station 30, one of only three original life saving stations still standing in New Jersey. In 1886, the building stood next to the sandy shore and ocean. Surfmen protecting sailors and any others from the ravaging waves lived in the station while off duty from their demanding job. Back then there was an average of four shipwrecks a month. The job of surfmen was so demanding that the motto of the Ocean City station was “You have to go out; You don’t have to come back; So others may live.”

Today, the Life Saving Station stands as a living history museum. Visitors can walk through the building as the surfmen did some 130 years ago. The kitchen, dining room, and boat house are all filled with period pieces that can be picked up and tried out. Play croquet on the lawn, complete a report at the Keeper’s desk, or sit in the surfboat. History is ready to come alive at US Life Saving Station 30.
