Cornhole Craze hits Somers Point
Looking for an indoor/outdoor activity that makes it easy to socialize without a lot of physical movement? Then we have one (compound) word for you.
Cornhole.
Chances are you’ve played this beanbag game on the beach, at the pool, or at a backyard party or watched cornhole competitions on TV (yes, really). Now, there’s a new place to go play— 24/7, year-round – Cornhole Craze on New Road in Somers Point.
“Cornhole is something a group of us just like to do. [We play] in backyards, we played in leagues. We wanted to do it all year round. It’s fun to do and it’s different,” he said. “People think it’s easy but it’s not. It takes a lot of skill,” said Reuben Ronas, co-owner. Reuben and four of his friends- Jet Pahang, Rick Dill, Joe Scioli, and Tim Donovan Jr.- played together in a league before deciding to start Cornhole Craze.
Reuben tore his achilles playing basketball and found cornhole to be easier on the body.
“I’d go to the gym very early especially during the pandemic. Cornhole was one of those safe activities because it’s so spacious.”
It makes sense to become a monthly member if you want to play more than once a month. It’s $25 for an hour lane rental or $27.77 for the month.
“Right now we have 85 members (annual members and monthly members). We have a lot of walk-ins, people are reserving lanes now. We’re already hosted two parties and we have several bookings coming up,” Reuben said.
Their cornhole boards are sponsored by local businesses, including restaurants.
“It is BYOB and also bring your own food. That’s the reason why we partnered up with local restaurants because we don’t have the amenities in the facility,” said Reuben.
They’re also looking to hold fundraisers as well as renting out their space.
“We have such a spacious location, it’s not just limited to cornhole,” said Reuben.
If you’re looking to join a league or be able to go and play with others, Cornhole Craze has options available.
“There’s a lot of cornhole organizations in NJ itself. We’re going to be building a group of people who will represent our facility. We’re going to be building teams,” said Reuben.
“When you come to cornhole, you don’t have to be skilled, you just want to have fun. In the cornhole community, everybody is welcoming,” said Reuben. “It’s just a fun environment.”
