Mayor’s Letter- July 31

Dear Friends,

We are watching a hurricane that is expected to move up the coast early next week. It’s still too early to tell exactly what effects Ocean City could see from Isaias. But we will have a full-moon tide on Monday (Aug. 3) at about 9 p.m. If wind and rain from the storm coincide with that tide, street flooding is likely. High tides on Tuesday (Aug. 4) are at 9:30 a.m. and 9:45 p.m. Please monitor forecasts over the weekend and be prepared to move vehicles, if necessary.

Atlantic City Electric asked the city to help spread the word about several energy assistance programs available to customers who may be facing challenges paying their energy bill due to the impact of COVID-19. Eligible customers can receive financial assistance through Helping Hands, a program, funded by Atlantic City Electric, which provides $1 million annually to help struggling customers meet their energy needs. These funds are dispersed each year to eligible residents through the Affordable Housing Alliance New Jersey SHARES Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Camden , and the People for People Foundation . Residents can apply for assistance by calling Atlantic City Electric at 800-642-3780 to ask about energy assistance programs as well as flexible payment arrangements that offer individually tailored payment installment plans.

I want to wish Doie Barnes a happy 99th birthday. Doie, who served in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve during World War II, is a regular at the flag-raising ceremony on the boardwalk, and on Thursday we presented her with a key to the city in recognition of her service to our country. It was fun to see a group of local citizens, neighbors and veterans gathered to sing “Happy Birthday” and present her with gifts.

Warm regards,
